Notes on using Sohcahtoa.xls

This workbook was produced with a GCSE retake class in mind and provides practice with solving right angled triangles using SOHCAHTOA (Some Old Harry Caught A Herring Trawling Off America or substitute your favourite version). It is aimed at revising/consolidating the topic.

The type of problem can be chosen from Sin, Cos, Tan or Mixed using the drop down list.

Labels of "op" "hyp" and "adj" can be added to the sides as an aid by clicking the "Toggle Labels on Sides" button. (This will not take effect until "new Problem" is clicked.)

The "Check your Answer" button asks the student for their answer and tells them if it is correct.

The "Help" button identifies the type of problem (Sin, Cos or Tan) and gives a brief reminder of method .

The "Step by step Solution" button generates a fairly full worked answer with reasoning.

Students could use this for independent revision.

Less confident students could work on a fixed type of problem at first and then move on to mixed problems later. They can use the Labels, Help, and Step by step Solution buttons as an aid when they get stuck but the aim is to be able to work without them.
